Capturing Real Moments And Emotions In Berlin - Corina Straub

Thanks to common contacts within our network, we got introduced to Corina, a local photographer for our upcoming photography exploration in Berlin on 5 & 6 August. With this Q&A article, we like to introduce you to her life and work. Enjoy!

Hi Corina, where are you from and how did you end up in Berlin?

I'm originally from Mexico but haven't actually lived there since I'm 15. My dad moved to Canada when I was 7 and so at some point the rest of us followed. I always knew Canada wasn't going to be home forever so as soon as I became a citizen I left and moved to London, one year into my move I photographed a conference around Europe and I met my now husband in Stuttgart. Berlin was kind of the place we imagined we would end up at some point. We've been here for 3 years now.

I just love people, I love the fact that photography gives me this opening to people’s life and stories. Capturing real moments, and emotions are what I’m after.

When did you decide to become a photographer?

And would you describe your photography, what are you after capturing?

Honestly, I don't really remember, all I know is I used to play I would develop film (wet paper) in our little laundry room in Mexico, and I always pretended to be a photographer. I was part of the photo club in high school and I enjoyed it, and when I graduated photography was really the only thing I could think of doing. So I did it.

I just love people, I love the fact that photography gives me this opening to people's life and stories. Capturing real moments, and emotions are what I'm after.

What are your favorite areas in Berlin? What is Berlin to you?

I love people watching so you'll find me at a park or a cafe, and there's plenty of those in Mitte. So I spend a lot of time around Prenzlauer Berg, Hackescher Markt, and museum island.

Berlin is so full of everything, full of history, full of coffees, full of restaurants, full of different cultures. I think Berlin is one of those places where you can always be surprised.

What inspiration would you like to share with fellow photography enthusiasts?
Why should people join the photography exploration and your Photowalk?

Photowalks, and in-person workshops are so key for us photographers, it’s so vital for us to be able to spend time outside and remember why we love photography, with no expectations or without trying to do it for a job or a project. To be able to share with other people alike and just have fun is so needed to stay inspired and in love with what we do.

I would like people to leave this photowalk just inspired to pick up their camera more often without having a plan, to stop to notice the way the light hits or moves around a building or how it falls on someone's face and try to capture it, you know simple moments that last seconds but we can keep forever.
