MAKING CITIES MORE HUMAN

We are a creative studio on a mission of making today’s cities more human.

We are a creative studio on a mission of making today’s cities more human.

Through creativity, experiences, and conversations, we're able to bring people together.

Capturing stories and facilitating meaningful connections between people + places is what we thrive on. Both within the concepts we launch and in collaborative projects with like-minded partners. Do you have a story to share?

SERVICES

City Stories, City Programming and City Insights, can be defined across:

  • Creative concepts + Research -
We craft concepts that evoke conversation and stories, based on research, insights, and creativity.

  • Photograph/ Film/ Interviews -
We capture human-interest stories, which is what we love doing most, sharing valuable encounters about what citizens care about.

  • Events & Explorations -
We produce & host community events/ explorations to facilitate connections and experiences, probably the most valuable of all.

  • Community - Quality over quantity, we’re here to get to know everyone and build a strong solid base of like-minded citizens around the world, that we can mobilize for our projects.

BACKGROUND

It all started in 2012, in Amsterdam, when launching
A City Made By People as a meet-a-local service. Travelers could ‘book’ a local, to get a local perspective of the city they were visiting. Why?

Because cities are a lot more than a list of hotspots and attractions that you visit, tick off your list and leave again to never call back. Right? We want to show cities how we live in them, what’s trending but also what has changed over time.

Throughout the years, the local service disappeared and we started sharing the same insights through publishing content in 2016 with an international network of correspondents. Beautiful stories that we shared here online, via printed publications, and across hosted speaker events.

At one point we had 25+ city chapters with 100+ correspondents. Crazy! But the content game is a tough one and at one point it cost me more than I would have wished for. Then the pandemic forced us to take a break for a while and rethink its positioning.

Which has led to other amazing projects like the Good Place interview series and the People Place & Photography explorations in 2023.

For 2024, A City Made By People will continue as a creative studio, with the same mission, but with multiple different projects and collaborations under its wing. Together with like-minded people, it’s our collective aim to make our cities more human and create a shift from I to WE.
