The Empty City - Amsterdam Nightlife in Lockdown

We are in lockdown, the city is closed and we as citizens are stuck to a curfew. Despite the fact that we’ve lost our freedom to a pandemic and businesses are suffering from having their doors shut, there are creative individuals out there that see this situation as an opportunity to create compelling stories and support our fellow locals.

Like Paul Bakker, a born and raised ‘Amsterdammer’ since 1981. He lives here with his wife and two daughters.
At daytime he’s the co-founder and creative director of brand building agency And Now This.

But at night he takes #shotoniphone photos with his iPhone and has created a beautiful photo series called ‘De lege stad.’ (The Empty City).

When I ask him about the idea behind this series, he responds:

"Strolling through Amsterdam I see the empty bars, restaurants and clubs. Places to relax, blow off steam and let loose. Spots that are usually filled with locals and visitors are now completely empty. With this series I want to document this moment in time. A moment that hopefully will be a thing of the past soon."

Thanks Paul for granting us permission to share some of your photos (and their locations in Amsterdam) here
on A City Made By People.
