The Confluence of Community, Food, & Design - Gather Seattle

Gather Seattle started to build a community to support creative ideas, the environment and each-other, all through serving delicious brunch, lunch, and dinner on a monthly basis.

We live in a relentlessly busy world and many of us find ourselves yearning for simplicity and connection, now more than ever. The opportunities to gather around a table to converse and enjoy a nourishing meal are far and few between. Chloe Csadenyi-Benson and Alexandra Katz are looking to change that, starting with Gather Seattle: a monthly intimate gathering that seeks to bring the food and design communities together to connect, inspire, and nourish.

Working as an architectural designer at Conard Romano Architects, Chloe’s interest in kitchen design and conscious eating inspired her to participate in the Seattle Design Foundation Farm to Table Grant. Gather Seattle was Chloe’s grant proposal for a storefront shared kitchen space that would encourage healthier eating, environmental stewardship, and social interaction. She was awarded grant money for popular vote and wanted to use it in a way that would have immediate and measurable impact. She decided that hosting a brunch event was the smart solution to taking her idea and starting to build a community around it in a format that invited room for growth.

Alexandra Katz discovered Gather Seattle on Instagram after parting from a job in the travel industry that afforded great opportunities for world exploration and photography, but little opportunity to settle down and find her tribe. After reaching out to Chloe, they connected over the vision of wellness, design-based interests, and meaningful interactions. The two women have since hosted two events together, reaffirming the importance of coming together to build community.

With the help of social media, Gather Seattle has reached out to creative, entrepreneurial women from the area, like business owners Moorea Seal and Kari Brunson. Gatherings have been hosted at beautiful spaces like the Little London Plane, Aran Goyoaga’s studio, Melrose Market, and local calligraphers, floral designers, and photographers are reaching out to get involved.

Gather Seattle’s vision of community centers around support: supporting creative ideas, supporting our environment, supporting each other. In times of uncertainty (much dependent upon the current political climate), what better time than now to organize and use our talents for good. Community-building has become more vital than ever; something we crave.

As for the future of Gather Seattle, the women hope to see it grow into Chloe’s original plan for a storefront shared community kitchen.  They also hope to see events continuously shaped by the participation and collaboration of the involved community. As long as Gather Seattle sets the table for honest conversation and event attendees leave feeling empowered their mission is accomplished.
