The 'Instaspots' You Have Yet to See - Amsterdam Photography City Guide

Our correspondents Linnea and Jan spent the day together tracking down the unique "Instagram-esque" spots of Amsterdam. Take a look at our Amsterdam Photography City Guide!

Amsterdam is unarguably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. If you are an Instagrammer and want to snap the perfect shot, it can be hard to do so without having a selfie stick or a group of lost tourists in your picture. If you want to fill your feed with the beautiful city parts in Amsterdam, yet (almost) undiscovered by other — see here!

Prinseneiland

Just a few minutes away from the busy city centre you will find yourself in one of Amsterdam's cutest neighbourhoods. With a mix of the classic Amsterdam buildings alongside with newer, more colourful and fun architecture, this neighbourhood makes it worth the visit. Prinseneiland is, in fact, an old harbor and used to be the centre of small industries. The old houses used to function as warehouses, but are now repurposed. A nice detail is that they still have signs telling you what used to be stored there. And the best thing — the tourists have not yet found their way here.

IJburg

Definitely worth the travel if you want to snap a shot of something extraordinary in Amsterdam. This newcomer of the Amsterdam neighbourhoods is built on a complex of artificial islands. The oldest building is from 2002, so the area offers a lot of modern buildings, water, and bridges. The residential blocks make their way for a more adventurous architecture, like the villas in the south or the Tennis club building designed by MVRDV. A great add if you want the more modern touch of Amsterdam in your Instagram feed.

OBA Library

Amsterdam is a city in which it is hard to get a good overview photo of. However, from the OBA library you will be blown away with the beautiful skyline of Amsterdam. If you are afraid of heights but still want to capture a great shot of this beautiful building, the inside is just as interesting frame wise as the outside. The library is designed by Jo Coenen & Co Architekten with the intention of creating an open, comfortable space with natural light in each corner. This really makes the light opportunities endless.

Eastern Docklands

With the neighborhood being built on 1/3 of land and 2/3 of water makes the beautiful bridges of Eastern Docklands all worth the visit. Over the canal between Sporenburg and Borneo Island, you can spot the bright red twin bridges Python Bridge (Hoge Brug) and Lage Brug, designed by Dutch architect Adriaan Gauze. The bridges serve their purpose of being practical if you want to cross the water, as they are beautiful to capture for your Instagram feed.

Amsterdam Noord (South-eastern parts)

You might have visited the A’Dam Tower or NDSM, but Noord does have more to offer then you might think. This really shows in the south-east parts of Noord. If you enter a building that on the first glance looks like a warehouse in a forgotten industrial area, you can find yourself in the coolest spot. FC Hyena is one of these locations. The cinema doesn't just offer a wide range of culture, but also a modern and quirky interior. Other cool spots with a nice Instagram friendly environment to visit in the same area is Skate café or Coba Taqueria.
